A lightweight in the 1930s, Baker fought four former, current, or future world champions in five different bouts in an 18-month period. In March 1936, he faced former bantamweight and featherweight champ Baby Arizmendi; the bout went to a ten-round draw. After defeating future welterweight champ Red Cochrane in a ten-round decison on September 29, Phil won an eight-round decision over the great Kid Chocolate in December 1936. In 1937, Baker's final year in professional boxing, he lost a ten-round decision to Lou Ambers, then another ten-round decision in his rematch with Kid Chocolate.
