A featherweight, Abel fought at the turn of the 20th Century against some top competition, including Abe Attell and Harry Harris.

Career Highlights:
Born in Chicago, Abel began fighting professionally in his hometown as a featherweight in 1899. The following year, he fought Jewish boxer Harry Harris twice in the span of five weeks. Harris, who would become the world champion in March 1901, knocked Abel out in the third round of their first bout -- the second bout ended in a draw.

Two years later, Abel fought another top Jewish boxer, Abe Attell. Their first bout, in August 1908, ended in a six round Attel victory. The next month they fought again and Abel lost a 20-round decision. In 1905, he fought Harris for a third time in New York and the bout ended in a three-round no decision.
