Brostoff, Benny

A highly-regarded featherweight, Brostoff fought professionally in the 1920s and 1930s. During his ten-year career, he fought some of the best boxers of the era, including Panama Al Brown, Pete Sanstol, and Mike Belloise.

Career Highlights:
Born in Russia, Brostoff immigrated to the United States and settled in the Bronx with his family. In 1925, at the age of 16, he made his professional debut. Over the next five years, he fought over 80 bouts before he fought Panama Al Brown, the future world bantamweight champion. That bout, which took place in June 1930, ended in the second round after Brown opened a cut over Brostoff's eye.

That November, Brostoff knocked out Leo "Kid" Roy, the Canadian lightweight and featherweight champion, in the tenth round -- the bout took place in Quebec City. In May 1931, Brostoff fought Pete Sanstol, the Montreal Athletic Commission world bantamweight champion. The fight went ten rounds, but Sanstol won the decision over Brostoff.

In February 1933, Brostoff fought a young Mike Belloise, a top future featherweight. Benny lost a five-round decision. Brostoff continued to box for another couple of years and retired with over 100 professional fights.
