Samuel Berger

A member of the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, Berger has a real, and extraordinary, distinction as a fighter. He was the first Olympic heavyweight champion when he won the gold medal at the 1904 St. Louis Games.

b. December 25, 1884 - d. February 23, 1925

Career Highlights:
The Olympic Champion as an amateur, Berger only fought professionally for two years. In July 1906, he had his most notable professional fight, a 6-round no decision against the light-heavyweight champion, Philadelphia Jack O'Brien. Three months latter, Berger was knocked out in the tenth round of his bout with future heavyweight contender Al Kaufmann. After retiring, Berger served as sparring partner for Jim Jefferies in the latter's comeback fight against Jack Johnson.
