Ruckenstein, who left Europe at the beginning of World War II, lived in the Jewish Ghetto in Shanghai, China for over 10 years. During this time, Ruckenstein began boxing with a Magen David on his trunks -- he won the Welter Weight Championship on Oct. 10, 1946. His family was killed in Auschwitz conventration camp, but he and his brother emigrated to the United States in 1947. He settled in Texas and was involved in the catering business for various hotels, including the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas.
