In September 1930, he fought on the undercard of Mickey Walker (middleweight champion) title bout and defeated Gene DiLayo. According to the New York Times, the referee 'refused to permit DeLayo to respond to the bell for the sixth round. DiLayo suffered a severe cut to his lower lip in the fifth session. At the time the bout was halted, Goldstein was far in front on points...'
