Louis Gevinson

Gevinson was an outstanding amateur champion of the 1930s who fought professionally later in that decade.

Birth and Death Dates:
b. December 31, 1912 - d. March 1976

Career Highlights:
In the 1930s, Gevinson fought as a featherweight, and won five consecutive Golden Gloves titles. He was named as an alternate for the 1936 Berlin Olympics, but refused to go as a "matter of principle." After turning professional in 1937, he fought future world featherweight champ Joey Archibald, losing on an eighth-round knockout. Later that year, Gevinson defeated Cristobal Jaramillo in a 10-round decision; the bout took place in Gevinson's hometown of Washington, D.C.
