Polugaevsky was the 1968 USSR Champion, and one of the world's strongest chess players in the 1960's and 1970's. He coached Karpov in 1978 and 1981 and played in 20 USSR tournaments.

Polugaevsky's game style is characterized by a skillful staging of the opening gambit and good positioning. He knew how to use the opponent's blunders to his advantage, and how to cut off any counterattack.
