Berger played college ball for Rice in the 1920s. He twice won his school's awards as the outstanding student athlete, and received All-Southwest Conference honorable mention

Career Highlights:
Berger played two seasons at Rice in the tough Southwest Conference. In 1926, the Owls finished the season with a mediocre record of 4-4-1. In 1927, the Owls continued to struggle and finished the season with a record of 2-6-1. Berger, however, had a good season and was named All-SWC honorable mention.
