Erving Max Goldstein

Goldstein was a three-time All-Southern selection and played at Florida in the 1920s. During his time with the Gators, the team rose to national prominance for the first time. In discussing the 1923 Florida-Georgia Tech game, Fuzzy Woodruff wrote in the History of Southern Football, "Florida showed one of the finest teams ever to step on Grant Field. In Goldstein and Williams, the Gators had two men the peers of anybody in the South." While at Florida, Goldstein also lettered in basketball and track.

Career Highlights:
Goldy was a solid player on the offensive line for Florida in the mid-1920s and is considered one of the Gators' all-time greatest guards. In 1923, he was named All-Southern as the Gators finished the season with a record of 6-1-2; their only loss was to Army in the first game of the season. The following year, Goldstein was named Walter Camp All-America honorable mention guard, and All-Southern guard as Florida finished 6-2-2 and outscored their opponents 211-44. In 1925, he was named All-Southern guard for the third consecutive year. That year, Florida finished with a record of 8-2-0. Goldy was selected by football historian Dr. L.H. Baker as a member of Florida's All-Time Team.

After graduating, Goldstein played one season of professional football. In 1926, he joined the Newark Bears of the newly-formed American Football League. The AFL was started by Red Grange's agent so that Grange could play in New York. Unfortunately, the league folded after only one season due to low finances and lack of attendance; many teams did not finish that first season because they could not afford to pay their players! Newark played five games and had a record of 0-3-2 before the franchise folded in October. "Goldy" is a member of the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame.

Goldstein played tackle and guard at the University of Florida from 1923-1925. He then played guard in the AFL for the Newark Bears in 1926.
