Gross, Louis : Jews In Sports @ Virtual Museum

Gross, Louis

Gross played ball for Minnesota, where he was awarded the Western Conference Medal for proficiency in scholarship and athletics. An outstanding all-around athlete, Gross also took third place in the 1922 NCAA discus throw (131'10").

In football, Gross played defense alongside George Abramson, and they called signals to one another in Yiddish -- except against Michigan, because, as Abramson explained, "they had Benny Friedman, who could understand the language."
