Lorber, Max "Muggs"

Max J. Lorber

Lorber was a three sport star (football, basketball, and baseball) at the University of Indiana in the 1920s. Muggs and his wife Janet bought a 70-acre site in northern Wisconsin in 1929 and began Camp Nebagamon; the camp was still running in 2003.

Career Highlights:
A quarterback, Lorber transferred from Illinois to the University of Indiana in the early 1920s after finding the atmosphere at Illinois unpleasant for Jewish athletes. A member of the Hoosier team in 1922 (they went 1-4-2 and lost to Notre Dame's famed Four Horsemen, 27-0), Lorber became the starting quarterback the following year and the Hoosiers improved to 3-4 (2-2 in conference).

In 1924, Lorber's senior year, he led Indiana to a record of 4-4 (1-3 in conference) and was named Walter Camp All-America honorable mention, Walter Eckersall All-Western Conference honorable mention, and All-Indiana.

Lorber was also a member of the basketball and baseball teams while attending Indiana. After graduating, Muggs became an assistant coach for the Indiana basketball team. He then moved to St. Louis, where he was athletic director of the local YMHA until he opened Camp Nebagamon. Lorber is a member of the St. Louis Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
