While playing quarterback at the University of Denver, Spekin was named All-Rocky Mountain. In 1927, David's team outscored their opponents 120-51 and had a record of 5-2-0. The following season, Denver had a record of 4-4-1. After missing the 1929 season, Spekin returned to the gridiorn in 1930 and Denver compiled a record of 5-4-0.
