Joseph Kaufman

In the mid-1930s, Kaufman played quarterback for three seasons at George Washington. In 1936, while leading the Colonials to a record of 7-1-1, Kaufman and his team almost upset Rice University in Texas by a score of 12-6 (the previous year, Rice defeated GW 41-0). Following the game, Washington Post columnist Shirley Povich reported that, "Kaufman was hailed the peer of any back in the Texas Conference, where brilliant backs abound. He did, indeed, provide a spectacular performance with his passing, running, and defensive play..."

The Colonials had a record of 6-3-0 in 1935. The following year, Kaufman was named AP All-East honorable mention and GW finished the season with a record of 7-1-1. In 1937, Kaufman's final season with the Colonials, they had a record of 3-4-1.
