Benedict Coren

A star at West Chester University in the 1940s, and the author of two books, Coren currently serves as the Chairman of the Curriculum Department at Cheyney University.

Career Highlights:
Known as "small Ben," Coren played football at West Philadelphia High School in the early 1940s and led his team to the city title in 1942 when he was named All-Public first team. He began his collegiate football career at the University of Nevada and was named All-Pacific Coast. Coren then transfered to West Chester University (in Pennsylvania) for the 1947 season. That year, when West Chester was 10-0-0, Coren was named AP All-America honorable mention, AP Little All-America second team, and AP All-East second team.

After he graduated in 1948, Coren began a long and illustrious career in education, receiving a Master's degree in 1961 and a PhD in 1970. He taught physical education and coached football on the high school and college levels, including stints as a coach at Dickinson College, and West Chester High School. In 1959, Coren became the Chairman of the Health and Physical Education Department in the Penn-Delco School District. During this time, he also served as assistant coach at Widener University. In 1969, Ben moved to Cheyney University as offensive coordinator and also was a Professor of Recreation. Coren was inducted into the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. He is also a member of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame (Delaware County Chapter) and the West Chester University Hall of Fame.
