Alan Goldstein

An All-America and All-ACC end at North Carolina, Goldstein played one season in the American Football League.

Career Highlights:
Born in Brooklyn, Goldstein was a terrific two-way end for North Carolina in the late 1950s. After playing sparingly as a sophomore in 1957 (he had only two catches for 47 yards), Goldstein caught a team-leading 24 catches for 490 yards, averaging an amazing 20.4 yards per reception, the following year. Al had some terrific individual performances: he caught four passes for 101 yards against Notre Dame, had a 68-yard touchdown reception against Virginia, and a 46-yard interception return for a touchdown against Maryland. That year, Goldstein was named first team All-America, and first team All-ACC.
In 1959, Al was once again the Tar Heels' leading receiver with 20 catches for 328 yards (a 16.4 yards per reception average) and two touchdowns. He was named All-ACC second team and the Heels finished the year with a record of 5-5 (5-2 in conference for second place). For the second consecutive year against Maryland, Goldstein returned an interception for a touchdown, this time for 40 yards.
In 1960, the AFL's initial season, Goldstein was drafted in the first round by the Buffalo Bills. The AFL held its draft before many teams even had a complete front office. Despite being drafted by the Bills, Goldstein played for the Oakland Raiders. In 14 games, Al caught 27 receptions for 354 yards and one touchdown; it was his only season in professional football. The Raiders finished with a record of 6-8-0, third in the AFL West.

Goldstein played end at the University of North Carolina from 1957-1959. He then played as an end in the AFL with the Oakland Raiders in 1960.
