Neft, Pete

Peter P. Neft

Neft was a quarterback at the University of Pittsburgh in the 1950s, and led the Panthers to the Sugar Bowl in 1955.

Career Highlights:
In 1952, Pete's first season with the Panthers, the team finished the season ranked No. 15 (UP) with a record of 6-3-0. Their biggest win that season was over No. 3 Notre Dame, 22-19. The following year, Pitt finished the season with a record of 3-5-1. In 1955, Neft was named UP All-East second team and led No. 11 Pitt to the Sugar Bowl, where they lost to No. 7 Georgia Tech, 7-0. That year, Neft was voted the outstanding Jewish athlete in the State of Pennsylvania.

After graduating in 1956, Neft was selected in the 23rd round of the NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pete never played in the NFL, but played halfback for Bolling Air Force Base and was named All-Air Force in 1957. He later played quarterback in the Canadian Football League for the British Columbia Lions, appearing in one game for the Lions in 1958.
