Youngelman, Sid

Sidney Youngelman

A 6'4", 250 pound lineman at the University of Alabama, Youngelman was named third team All-SEC (Southeastern Conference) in 1954, the same year he captained the Crimson Tide football team. He then turned pro and played in both the NFL and AFL, appearing in over 100 games during his career. Sid was a second team All-AFL defensive tackle in 1960.

Career Highlights:
Youngelman, who entered Alabama on a basketball scholarship, was an excellent lineman at Alabama in the mid-1950s. In 1952, Sid's first year on the team, the Tide finished the season with a record of 10-2-0, including an overwhelming 61-6 victory over Syracuse in the Orange Bowl, and were ranked No. 9 in the country. The following year, Alabama had a record of 6-2-3 (including a 21-0 loss to national champs Maryland) and won the SEC Championship. In the Cotton Bowl, Alabama fell to Rice, 28-6, but were still ranked No. 11 by the UP poll (No. 13 by the AP). In 1954, Youngelman was elected team captain of the Tide, and was named UP All-Southeastern Conference third team although the team only had a record of 4-5-2.

After graduating, Youngelman was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the seventh round (83rd overall) of the NFL Draft. In 1955, Sid played ten games for the 49ers who finished the season with a record of 4-8-0. The following year, he moved to the Philadelphia Eagles and played three seasons with them, during which the Eagles had a combined record of 9-25-2. In 1959, Youngelman moved to the Cleveland Browns, who finished the season with a record of 7-5-0, second in the NFL West.

In 1960, Sid joined the New York Titans (now the Jets) of the newly-formed American Football League. That year, he played in all 14 regular season games and was named AFL All-League second team defensive tackle. He played in all 14 games the following season for the Titans (7-7-0), and then moved to the Buffalo Bills in 1962. In 1963, the Bills finished second in the AFL East (7-6-1), but lost to the Boston Patriots, 26-8, in the Eastern Division playoff game. During the game, Youngelman partially blocked a field goal (it was still good). He retired after the season, having played in a total of 107 career NFL and AFL games.
