Pappenheimer played college football, basketball and baseball for Mississippi State and captained the football team as a senior in 1929.

Pappenheimer was captain of the 1929 Mississippi State team, and was selected to Mississippi State's All-Time team by football historian Dr. L.H. Baker. He played three seasons for the Bulldogs who had a combined record of 8-12-4 during his career. He is a member of the Mississippi State Athletic Hall of Fame.
