Born in New York, Spector attended Lincoln High School in the late 1940s and then went west to Santa Ana Junior College (California), where he was named All-Southern California JC third team in 1949. Spector joined the USC Trojans and played on the varsity in 1953 when the team had a record of 6-3-1 (4-2-1, in third place in the Pac 10 conference). The following year, Spector played a key role in the Trojans' success as the team finished the regular season with a record of 8-3-0 (6-1-0 and in second place in the conference). Despite their second place finish, USC played in the Rose Bowl because the Pac 10 conference had a 'no-repeat' rule that barred conference champion UCLA (University of California-Los Angeles) from returning to the Bowl in consecutive years. In the Rose Bowl, USC faced Big 10 champion Ohio State, led by famed coach Woody Hayes, and lost 20-7. The Trojans finished the year ranked No. 11 in the UP poll and No. 17 in the AP.
