Silver was the starting quarterback at the University of Notre Dame from 1903-1905. As a sophomore in 1903, Nate led the Irish to an undefeated season.

After backing up in 1902, Silver was a three-year starter at quarterback for the Irish. One of Notre Dame's great early quarterbacks, Nate led the Irish to an 8-0-1 undefeated season in 1903. Notre Dame had a combined record of 10-7-0 during Silver's final two seasons.
