Louis S. Bernstein

In the early years of the twentieth century, college football was dominated by Eastern schools and the West was given very little respect. In 1909, Berstein helped change that as he led Illinois against mighty Syracuse in the final game of the season. After the Illini defeated the Orangemen, 17-8, several Syracuse newspapers raved about the "open style of the Westerners," especially Bernstein. One paper, quoted in The Illinois Alumni Quarterly, wrote: "Bernstein was easily the star of the game for the Westerners...In executing the forward pass he was the surest, straightest, and swiftest handler of the ball on either team."

Career Highlights:
In 1910, Bernstein helped Illinois win its first Big Ten championship with a record of 7-0 (4-0 in conference). The Illini outscored their opponents, 89-0, during the season, including a 3-0 victory over Syracuse. On October 15, Illinois defeated the University of Chicago, 3-0, in their first college homecoming game. Louis was also the captain of the Illinois basketball team in 1911 and was named All Big-Ten second team in 1910 and 1911.
