Straus, Joe

Joseph Straus

Straus was an All-East halfback at the University of Pennsylvania in the late 1910s, and was also the captain of the Quaker baseball team. Joe's brother Fred, also played for Penn in 1920. Olympic wrestler Sam Gerson (a Penn alumnus) said, "The two Straus brothers were from San Antonio, Texas and they brought considerable joy to the Jewish boys in the school."

Career Highlights:
Straus played two seasons at Penn. In 1917, he was named Walter Camp All-America honorable mention and the Quakers had a record of 9-2-0 and outscored their opponents 245-71. After taking two years off, Straus returned to Penn in 1920 and his team compiled a record of 6-4-0. That year, Joe was named Walter Camp All-America honorable mention and New York Herald first team All-East.
