Richmond, Steve

Richmond was an NHL defenseman in the 1980's playing for New York, New Jersey, Detroit, and Los Angeles. After the Rangers recalled him from the minors in November, 1985, Richmond had the following reaction: "Youre probably a piece of meat everywhere you play, but at least in the NHL, youre prime rib."

Career Highlights:
After playing at the University of Michigan in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Richmond was signed as a free agent by the New York Rangers in 1982. He spent the 1982-83 season in the minors, then was called up during the 1983-84 season and played in 26 games for the Rangers (42-29-9). Steve spent the next two seasons moving between the Rangers and the minors. In 1985, he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings and played 29 games for the Red Wings who finished out of the playoffs with a record of 17-57-6. Before the 1986-87 season, Steve was traded to the New Jersey Devils, with whom he had his best season in the NHL. He played in a career-high 44 games (it was the only year of his career that he spent no time in the minors) and had a career-high 8 points, but the Devils missed the playoffs.

Despite putting up the best numbers of his career, Steve spent the following season entirely in the minors and was signed as a free agent by the Los Angeles Kings in 1988. He played in only 9 games for the Kings that year before returning to the minors; it was his final time in the NHL. Richmond played in the minors for the next two years before retiring from hockey in 1991, having played in 159 career NHL games. He also played in 4 career NHL playoff games with no points, but with 12 penalty minutes.
