Konrad, Jeno

Jeno, with his brother Kalman Konrad, played on the Hungarian National team before World War I, and later played for Austria. Both brothers also served as trainers for Austrian teams.

Career Highlights:
Konrad played for club team MTK Budapest in Hungary in the 1910s, and also played one international match as a member of the Hungarian National team. After his playing days, Jeno became a renowned coach, working in Germany in the 1930s before anti-Semitism caused him to move to Italy. When Konrad and his family were expelled from that country in 1938, Jeno went to France, secured a French visa, and coached in Lille. Although he improved the team he was coaching, he lost his job, again because of anti-Semitism.

As the safety of his family became precarious, Jeno secured visitors' visas to Portugal in 1940, but was only allowed in the country after soccer fans influenced the country's leader to allow Konrad and his family to enter. After three months, the Konrads emigrated to the United States on a small boat called the San Miguel, a Portuguese cargo ship carrying cork. After two weeks of travel, carefully avoiding German U-boats, the San Miguel and the Konrads safely arrived in the United States.
