Chodorov, Ya'acov

Chodorov is thought by many to be the greatest Israeli goalkeeper in history, and in his heyday was considered second only to Lev Yashin on the world scene. During his illustrious career, Chodorov played for Maccabi and Hapoel Rishon, Hapoel Tel Aviv and Shimshon Tel Aviv, among others.

Career Highlights:
In 1949, the year he made his international debut with the Israeli National team, Chodorov was named Israel's Sportsman of the Year. Two years later, Arsenal, the great English professional team offered him a contract. Ya'acov turned the Gunners down, saying that he was unwilling to leave Israel. Over the next 11 years, Chodorov appeared in 27 international games for Israel and was the starting goalkeeper for every important competition. In 1998, he was named by the Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot as the fifth greatest Israeli soccer player in the nation's history.
