Romano, Moshe

Romano was an immensely effective striker blessed with unparalleled control in small spaces. In those ultra-defensive days of Israeli soccer (1960s), there was only room for one out and out scorer, and Romano was forever overshadowed on the Israeli National team by Mordechay Spiegler, a more well-rounded forward. Nevertheless, Romano is second on the Israeli all-time scorers list (138 goals in 438 career Israel League games), and his scoring talents have been rarely matched since.

Career Highlights:
Raised in the independent GADN'A Yehuda team, Romano starred on the Israeli youth team that won the 1964 and 1965 Asian Championships. Signed by obscure Shimshon Tel-Aviv, the striker was a teen sensation. He finished the 1965-66 season with 17 goals and was the top scorer in the Israel League(along with his rival Spiegler). He was 18-years old at the time.

Although Romano continued to rake in the goals with Shimshon, he seemed to always be at odds with the managment. He ran off to South Africa on more than one occasion, and always came back with a better contract. The league's top scorer again in the 1969-70 season with 15 goals, Romano soon transfered to Betar Tel Aviv and led the league in scoring in 1972-73 with 18 goals. A return to Shimshon saw him top the scoring charts for the final time in 1974-75 (17 goals). After his playing days ended, Romano had a modest coaching career. Today, he sells fruit juice.
