Avitan, Shalom

Shalom Avitan played for Ber Sheva in the 1970s and 1980s. When he was with the club, Ber Sheva were so tough to beat, that the cliche "every title passes through Ber Sheva" is still uttered today.

Career Highlights:
Avitan first made his mark in the Hapoel Ber-Sheva first team during the 1972-73 season, when he scored on his debut and helped Ber Sheva finish sixth. Over the next two seasons, the desert diamond spent two seasons in "exile" at the mediocre Betar Jerusalem. In 1974-75, Hapoel won their first-ever title without Shalom, to his eternal regret.

In 1975-76, Shalom made a spectacular homecoming. With the infallible Amatzia Lebkovitz at the helm, Ber Sheva took their second straight Israel League title. Avitan had a career year, and amazed the country with his technique.

During the 1983-84 season, Avitan was in the limelight for all the wrong reasons; he slapped Vicko Ohaion. Two years later, during the 1985-86 season, Avitan was cut by his beloved team. He finished his career with 118 goals in Israel League play. Avitan's son also played as striker for Ber Sheva.
