Gruenweld, Max

Gruenwald was a center forward (striker) with Hakoah-Vienna in the 1920s, and was an oustanding scorer. The soccer team, which has been inducted as an entity into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, toured the United States in 1926 and played ten games in front of a total of 200,000 people. In one game, they played before a record crowd of 46,000 -- a record headcount that stood until 1977. Gruenwald also played for the Austrian National team in the 1920s.

Career Highlights:
After touring the United States in 1926, Gruenwald signed with the New York Giants of the American Soccer League. In his first year in the league, he scored 17 goals in 37 games. The following year, he finished second in the league in scoring with 29 goals in 51 games. Gruenwald played three more seasons in the ASL for the New York Hakoah (also known as the Hakoah All-Stars). He finished his career as the 21st most prolific scorer in ASL history with 71 goals in 161 games.
