In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Bernhard was one of America's top women tennis players. When she was ranked No. 4 in the U.S. in 1942, it was the highest ranking a Jewish woman had achieved up to that time.

Career Highlights:
Bernhard began playing tennis at the age of 11, and in 1937, she won the USTA Girls National Hard Court Doubles Championship with partner Patricia Cummings; the next two years, Helen was the singles champion. From 1940-1943, Bernhard was ranked in the top ten in the U.S., with her highest ranking in 1942 at No. 4.
