Darmon, Pierre

Darmon was the top French player from 1956-64 (except 1958). He was ranked in the top ten worldwide in 1958, 1963, and 1964. In 1990, he was named executive vice-president for Europe of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).

Career Highlights:
One of France's top tennis players in the 1950s and 1960s, Pierre reached the doubles final at Wimbledon with Jean Claude Barclay in 1963, but lost to Antonio Palafox and Rafael Osuna. He played 69 Davis Cup matches for France from 1956-67, winning 47 of them. In 1957, Darmon won both singles and doubles in the French National Championship. He was either No. 1 or near the top in the French rankings from 1956 up until the 1970s (Darmon's last No. 1 ranking in France was in 1968). The highest world ranking earned by Pierre was No. 8 in 1963. He is a member of the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
