As a freshman at Rutgers University in 1927, Nannes won the school tournament and was asked to coach the varsity team as the school's No. 1 player.

Casper, who was the No. 1 player at Rutgers for three years, later coached his alma mater's team for eight years. He then coached at the University of Illinois in 1936-37 and was an active member of the Publicity Committee of the USLTA. In 1991, along with fellow tennis great Arthur Ashe, Nannes was inducted into the Mid-AtlanticTennis Hall of Fame.
