Schuman, Charles "Gyp"

Schuman played basketball for NYU in the late 1920s and was one of the best defensive players of his era. He is a member of the New York University Athletic Hall of Fame,

Career Highlights:
A forward known for his defense, Schuman joined the NYU varsity in 1928 as a sophomore. That year, he joined fellow sophomore George Newblatt, and NYU finished 8-6, but lost the season finale to arch-rival CCNY (City College of New York). Schuman scored two points in the 29-26 loss.

The following season, Schuman stepped into the starting line-up and helped NYU become one of the best teams in the East. They captured the Yale Basketball Tournament (a short-lived four-team tournament) and finished the season with a 13-5 record. Unfortunately, they also lost for the second straight year to CCNY, 40-24, although Schuman scored a game-high eight points and was praised for his, "...stellar part on the offensive [end]."

In 1930, Schuman was one of the best players in the New York Metropolitan area. He and Newblatt (the team captain) led NYU to a terrific season. Early in the year, Schuman scored 16 points in a 35-24 victory over Columbia. They finished the season with a 13-3 record, including a 37-33 win over CCNY. Schuman scored nine points in that contest and was later named by CCNY head coach (and Hall of Famer) Nat Holman as a first team All-Metropolitan selection.
