Green, Harold

A welterweight and middleweight in the 1940s and early 1950s, Green fought four future or former world champions during his career, but never received a title shot in either division. After retiring in 1952, Green owned a marine equipment business.

Career Highlights:
After dropping out of school, Green began boxing as an amateur at the age of 14. Four years later, He fought his first professional fight, defeating Willis Johnson in four-rounds. His career was postponed when he joined the U.S. Army in 1943-44, but when he returned to the ring, he won 24 straight fights and became a top welterweight; he was ranked No. 7 in the world by Ring magazine in 1944. That year, Green defeated future middleweight champ Rocky Graziano twice, with both fights ending in 10-round decisions.

In 1945, Green began the year strong as he defeated Morris Reif for the vacant Brooklyn welterweight title and then beat former world champ (and Hall of Famer) Fritzie Zivic in a 10-round decision. In September, Green faced Graziano for a third time, but by then Rocky was a middleweight and outweighed Green by ten pounds; Green was knocked out in the third-round. In 1947, Green also moved up to middleweight and faced Marcel Cerdan (world champion the following year), who knocked Green out in the second-round. In 1950, Green fought another future world middleweight champ, Joey Giardello, knocking him out in the sixth. Two years later, Green was knocked out in the rematch and retired following the fight having won 72 of 87 career decisions.
