Zimet, Vic

A dedicated trainer in boxing's amateur ranks who was responsible for improved safety as a trainer, Zimet passed away on January 12, 2003. During his association with the New York Metropolitan AAU, Vic introduced headguards and inaugurated international weight classes in the Golden Gloves. Zimet also developed 17 New York Golden Gloves champions.

A teacher and administrator in the New York public school system, Vic was an assistant ringside manager at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. In 1986, Zimet was named Coach of the Year by the National Amateur Boxing Federation.

Career Highlights:
Zimet had an amateur boxing career in which he appeared in the 1936 New York Golden Gloves and was captain of the boxing team at City College of New York (class of 1939). Following his fight career, he began training at Beecher's Gym in Brooklyn. A strong advocate of amateur boxing, Vic developed 17 New York Golden Gloves champions and helped launch the pro careers of Al "Bummy" Davis, Curly Nichols, and Bernie "Schoolboy" Friedkin.
