A member of the Soviet Union's canoeing team at the 1960 Rome Olympics, Geischtor and partner Sergei Makarenko competed in the men's 1000-meter Canadian pairs competition. In their preliminary heat, Geischtor and Makarenko won the race with a time of 4:27.29. In the final, they easily won the gold medal, finishing in 4:17.94, three seconds ahead the Italian team.

Career Highlights:
In the 1960s, Leonid excelled in the Canadian pairs competition in both European and World competitions. He won the European Championship in 1961 and 1965, and the World Championship in 1963.
