Karponosov was a member of the Soviet Union figure skating team at two Olympiads and competed in the pairs event with partner Natalya Linichuk. After finishing fourth at the 1976 Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria, the Soviet duo captured the gold medal at the 1980 Lake Placid (New York) Winter Olympics.

Career Highlights:
Karponosov (with Linichuk) won the gold medal in the pairs competition at the 1978 and 1979 World Championships. They also finished third at the 1974 and 1977 World Championships, and won the 1979 and 1980 European Championships. After their competitive career, Karponosov and Linichuk married and became skating coaches, training Oksana Baiul and other top skaters in the world. They also trained the Israeli skating pair of Galit Chait and Sergei Sakanovsky, who competed at the 1998 Olympics. On October 1, 2000, Karponosov was elected to the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
