Yelena, whose husband, Konstantin Rurak competed for the Ukraine in two Olympiads (1996 and 2000), is one of her country's top 400-meter runners. At the 1996 Atlanta Games, Yelena finished fifth in her preliminary heat in the 400-meter with a time of 52.92 and did not advance to the next round.

At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Rurak competed in the 400-meter and again failed to advance past the prelims. She finished in 53.45 in her heat.

Career Highlights:
One of Ukraine's top 400-meter and 800-meter runners, Rurak was ranked No. 50 in the world in the 400-meter in July 2001. A terrific relay runner, she ran the anchor leg of the 4x400-meter team at the 1995 World Championships, when Ukraine made the semifinals and raced to a time of 3:26.43, but did not advance to the finals.

At the 1998 World Cup, Yelena ran the second leg for the European team that finished in fifth place with a time of 3:26.34. That same year, at the European Championships, Rurak finished seventh in the women's 400-meter race with a time of 51.92. Rurak was the Ukrainian champion in the women's 400-meter in 1995, 1998, and 2000.
