Veretelnikov, a decathlete, competed at the 2000 Sydney Games as a representative of Uzbekistan. He withdrew from the competition due to injury after the first event, the 100-meter dash (Oleg ran a 12.17). He officially finished in 38th place.

Career Highlights:
Veretelnikov was the 1997 Central Asian Games and 1998 Asian Games decathlon champion. At the 1997 World Championships, he finished in 20th place with 7,698 cumulative points. Two years later, Veretelnikov moved up to 11th place at the World Championships with 7,853 points. His best mark in a decathlon is 8,278 points (set at the 1998 Asian Games). He had previously finished sixth in the event at the 1994 Goodwill Games.
