A member of the Soviet Union's shooting team at the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games, Vainshtein competed in two events. He won the bronze medal in the free-rifle event with 1,109 points, and finished tied for fourth in the free pistol with 546 points (the bronze medal-winner had 549). Vainshtein later became the coach of the Soviet shooting team at the 1964 Games.
