At the age of 36, Plyukfelder was a member of the Soviet Union weightlifting team at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He won the gold medal in the light-heavyweight class, setting an Olympic record of 1,075 pounds (475-kg)

Career Highlights:
Plyukfelder began lifting weights in 1950 and won six Russian National championships. One of the world's best lifters for a decade, he won the gold medal at the World Championships in 1959 and 1961, and the European Championships in 1959 and 1960. An electrician by trade, he was a Merited Master of Sports of the Soviet Union.
