During the competition, the Hungarians went undefeated to capture the gold medal, beating Morocco (6-0) and Yugoslavia (6-5) in their preliminary group, and then defeating Romania (2-0) in the quarterfinals, Egypt (6-0) in the semifinals, and Czechoslovakia (2-1) in the gold medal game.
