Strauss was a member of the United States fencing team at the 1924 Paris Olympics and competed in the team sabre event. He fenced in only one match, a quarterfinal meeting with Hungary (the eventual silver medal-winning team), and lost all four of his bouts. Hungary defeated the U.S. in the match, 2-14, and the Americans were eliminated from the competition in the quarterfinals after losing to Hungary, and Italy (4-12); their match with Belgium was called off after both teams were eliminated.

In 1922, Strauss was the United States individual epee champion.
