Lewis captained the United States fencing team at the 1948 London Olympic Games, and competed in both the individual and team epee events. In the individual competition, Lewis reached the finals by winning his semifinal pool with six victories. In the finals, however, Lewis did not finish in the top six. The U.S. failed to place in the top eight. One of Lewis' epee teammates was Ralph Goldstein.

Career Highlights:
A member of the New York University Athletics Hall of Fame (class of 1937), Lewis helped NYU capture three straight Intercollegiate Fencing Association foil titles in the mid-1930s. He won the U.S. foil championship in 1939 and was the U.S. epee champion in 1948-1950.
