Pence was a member of the United States swimming team at the 1948 London Olympic Games. She competed in the 200-meter breaststroke, but did not qualify for the finals. In 1984, she returned to the Olympics as the U.S. assistant manager of the U.S. swim team, and was manager of the team at the 1992 Games.

Career Highlights:
One of the best American swimmers in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Pence was one of the first swimmers from Purdue University to compete at the Olympics, even though Purdue did not have a women's varsity team. Pence also competed nationally for the Indiana Swimming Club. She won the 100-yard breaststroke at the 1949 National AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) outdoor championships (1:25.8), and the National AAU indoor championships in 1948 (1:15.2) and 1951 (1:12.5). Pence also won the 250-yard breaststroke title at the AAU indoor championships in 1950 (3:01.4) and 1951 (2:45.0); in 1951, the race was only 200 yards. Pence was a member of the 300-yard medley relay champion team at both the AAU indoor (1950 and 1952) and outdoor (1950 and 1951) championships.
