A member of the United States men's gymnastics team at the 1964 Tokyo Games, Shurlock's contribution helped the U.S. finish in seventh place in the team combined exercise. He finished 68th in the individual all-around competition. Shurlock was an assistant coach for the U.S. men's gymnastics team at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Career Highlights:
In the 1950s and 1960s, Shurlock was considered one of America's best gymnasts. In 1957 and 1958, he won the National AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) Championship in the pommel horse; in 1958, he finished 43rd in the individual all-around at the World Championships. Art then won the AAU horizontal bars and the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) pommel horse titles in 1959 (he also finished fifth in the vault at the NCAAs). In 1963, Shurlock won the all-around title at the first U.S. Gymnastics Federation National Championship.

After retiring from competition, Shurlock became a coach and led the University of California-Los Angeles (where he coached Mitch Gaylord) to two NCAA Championships, in 1984 and 1987. Shurlock, who has a maneuver on the pommel horse named after him, was the College Gymnastics Association president from 1991-1993. He is a member of the University of Illinois-Chicago Athletic Hall of Fame (he attended the school in 1955 and 1956), and the University of California Athletic Hall of Fame (attended 1959 and 1960).
