Gary, one of the world's top shot putters, competed in weightlifting at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, but did not compete in track and field events due to injuries. He demonstrated his athletic versatility at the Games by nearly medaling as a weightlifter, finishing in fourth place in the super-heavyweight division.

Career Highlights:
In 1961, Gubner competed in the Soviet Union and attended Friday night services in a Moscow synagogue. Later that year, he won gold medals in the shot put, discus, and heavyweight weightlifting at the Maccabiah Games. In 1962, Gubner set an indoor world record in the shot put (64'11 3/4") and finished second in the voting for the Outstanding Performer at the Millrose Games. Gary was ranked No. 1 in the world in the indoor shot put in 1962 and 1963, and while at NYU, he was the NCAA champion in the shot put in 1963 and 1964. Gubner was an impressive weightlifter as well, and in 1965, he set an American national press record of 412 pounds on his way to lifting 1,180 pounds, the fourth highest total in history up to that point. On October 1, 2000, Gubner was elected to the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
