Gutfreund was killed by Arab terrorists at the 1972 Munich Games. He attended the Games as a wrestling referee and had previously officiated at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. He was 41 years old.

Career Highlights:
After emigrating to Israel from Romania in the late 1950s (he had been a youth champion in Romania), Gutfreund became a higly-regarded wrestling referee, officiating at two World Championships. Yosef also helped promote the sport of wrestling at his club, Hapoel Jerusalem.
