A Danish boxer, Michaelsen competed for his country in the heavyweight division at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. He received a first-round bye (drew no opponent) and then defeated a French fighter named Garbedois in the second round. Upon reaching the semifinals, Jacob faced Arturo Rodrigues Jurado of Argentina (the eventual gold medalist) and lost a decision. He then fought in the third-place bout against a Norgwegian and captured the bronze medal when his opponent retired.

Career Highlights:
Michaelsen was the Danish amateur heavyweight champion in 1928. Two years later, he won the gold medal in the heavyweight division at the European amateur championships. Michaelsen also won the silver medal in 1928 and the bronze medal in 1927 at the European championships.
