Hyman uses a unique sideways underwater kick and claims to have pioneered the extended break-out technique, which now is used by many top-level swimmers.

In 1997, Misty finished in third place in the 200-meter butterfly at the Pan Pacific Championships. In 1998, she won the Honda Award for swimming and was named the NCAA Swimmer of the Year.
